Communication, Leadership & Ethics
Communication, Leadership & Ethics focuses on the human side of engineering — how teams collaborate, how trust is built, and how ethical decision-making shapes both technical and organizational outcomes.
Omgpop, Zynga, and the One Who Got Away
As many casual gamers already know, the company Omgpop, makers of the mobile sensation Draw Something, was acquired by Zynga, makers of Farmville, Words with Friends, and many other popular social and/or casual games. This morning I saw an artible on Gamasutra about the one Omgpop employee that didn’t sign on to continue working under Zynga.
The Logical Fallacy of Pirating Content
The Oatmeal had a comic recently about trying to watch the HBO show Game of Thrones. I thought it was funny, but a bit ignorant, and a poor excuse for doing something illegal. It made me a little angry, but I didn’t really want to dwell on it, and after a couple of days of people linking to the comic it went away. Then I saw an article on PandoDaily that made me angry all over again. Luckily, within an hour, another article showed up (on the same site, mind you) that turned all that anger into laughter. On its own, the first article is a poorly reasoned tale of entitlement; however as a pair they are well worth a read!
Mandatory Programming Education
I recently read this article at InfoWorld which discusses the idea of requiring students at the middle or high school level to learn how to program. The author, Neil McAllister, cites the increasing need for basic computer literacy in our technology-dependent world. While I agree that computer literacy is of critical importance today, I don’t entirely agree that courses on programming are the way to get there, at least not the way programming courses are taught currently.
